In Greek mythology sun deities were was known as Helios and Apollo. The sun-god Ra, was the first king of Egypt. In different manners, the sun has been worshiped throughout history and has also played a major role in some religions. The suns influence has been seen in Buddhism, Hinduism, and many of the native American tribes, to name a few. Solar energy has influenced mankind for centuries

The appearance of the sun in the sky is prominent due to the fact that it is the closet star to the our planet. The sun not only emits light, but also heat that is transformed into various forms of energy. The simple act of laundry being hung out of doors, uses the suns heat as a form of energy to dry our clothing. The suns light also enables plants to produce food. The uneaten foods would then decay and in a process that took millions of years fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil were produced. Exploding stars referred to as nova’s produce nuclear energy through the emission of uranium atoms.

The uses for the suns energy are infinite. Humankind has long made use of its properties. The 1890’s found people heating their hot water with solar energy. Cheaper than wood and coal, it was also a cleaner alternative. In the U. S. The states having the sunniest and warmest number of days emerged as the first ones to use solar energy for heating water. Solar panels to heat water were installed in thousands of homes by the 1920’s. When greater amounts of oil and gas were found and prices plummeted for these fuels, many reverted back to their use. Presently, there is concern that the demand is beginning to exceed the supply and solar energy has moved again to the forefront.

Electricity is another horizon being developed with the use of solar energy. Located in California’s Mojave Desert, one can find row upon row of solar mirrors. These mirrors are called parabolic troughs as they collect sunlight in a specific way. The suns heat becomes so intense that it can boil water and the resulting steam in turn will power a turbine to produce electricity. Other forms of power plants, some still in the experimental stage, are focusing their efforts toward greater efficiency in the production of electricity.

A way has also been discovered to turn solar energy directly into electricity. This is accomplished by the use of photovoltaic cells. When struck by the sun, the PV’s or solar cells, cause the loosening of electrons. The loosened electrons move to the front of the panel creating an imbalance within the front and back surfaces. Acting as a connector, these surfaces allow the flow of electricity from positive to negative. Special devices located on these panels allow for the tracking of the suns rays and sunlight can be collected for longer periods.

This direct form of energy, from solar cell to electricity, is immediately available for use. In our homes, it can tun on our lights and run our appliances. Businesses can even store electricity in batteries for use in illuminating billboards during hours of darkness. Roadside emergency cell phones can also be ran with an energy stored battery.

The electric automobile is now within the range of use. The use of PV cells located in these cars will allow for sunlight collection that is directly transferred in to electricity that will power the motors of these autos. Smog filled cities due to car and factory emissions could easily become a blight of the past. Solar power collection no longer has to be located miles from the earths surface. Advances will continue to be made as technology is only on the surface of what sun produced energy can do.

The more wind there is, the more electricity can be made. In excess of 11,000 turbines are presently being used, so one can imagine the number at each site. The power of the wind has worked for mankind for many centuries. <noindex>Wind Sock</noindex>

Solar energy is an excellent source that has the potential to greatly reduce environmental pollution. Unfortunately, it's recognized as an "alternative energy" since it isn't an energy source used by a majority of the population. One of the main reasons is that it's still quite costly to manufacture. Right now, calculators and decorative outdoor lights are a couple of the most popular solar powered gadgets. The question remains, how do solar panels work? How does setting up a small panel, directed towards the sun, turn the sunlight into the electricity that keeps those pretty, bluish bright lights lighting up the walkway all night long?

Solar energy is an excellent source that has the potential to greatly reduce environmental pollution. Unfortunately, it’s recognized as an “alternative energy” since it isn’t an energy source used by a majority of the population. One of the main reasons is that it’s still quite costly to manufacture.

The basic answer is that certain materials are used to harness the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity which can be used to power our electronic devices. But it’s a bit more complex.

In today’s world, we’re using a growing technology called photovoltaic (PV) electricity. Special materials are used to turn the sun’s energy into electricity and it can be used immediately or stored in DC batteries.

These special materials for solar panels have just recently been developed. They release electrons when influenced by the sun’s energy. This creates the flow of voltage and the flow of electricity. A simpler, more descriptive name for a photovoltaic panel is a “direct energy conversion device”. This makes perfect sense since all these effects take place on an atomic level without any moving parts.

Historically, only space age technology used photovoltaic panels. Space stations and satellites used them because they were a reliable source for continuous solar energy conversion. The extra bonus that using them in outer space has is that the sun’s radiation is at least 50% stronger than it is here on Earth.

Those living far from an electrical grid, more than a mile, are more likely to use photovoltaic technology, especially in residential homes. Power transmission cables cost way more to install than a photovoltaic power array would. If you’re a notable distance from an electrical grid, then it may be a good idea to consider solar energy for your power source.

Still, how do solar panels work? Understanding solar energy can help answer this question. Solar energy’s made up of two kinds of radiation, and the most desirable for solar panels is called “beam radiation”. This is what we feel when soaking up sun rays on the beach in June, when there’s not a cloud in the sky. Clear days are the best for collecting beam radiation, but the solar panel needs to be placed strategically to gather the most direct sun rays possible if you want to get the most from your solar panel.

The other kind of radiation from the sun is called “diffuse radiation”. This shouldn’t be relied on for the sole energy to be absorbed by your solar panels. This is what we feel on an overcast, cloudy day or if chilling out under a shady tree. To rely on this type of energy from the sun as your main source of sunlight is far from practical.

For solar panels to work efficiently, a sunny location is mandatory. Beam radiation is the most effective since it’s the strongest. Most of Western America qualifies as a good locale for beam radiation those states are good candidates for the use of solar energy, but northern climates and coastal states are usually quite cloud-laden and sadly, not worthy of 100% solar-reliance.

Solar panels can be set-up to meet your specific needs. 12 volt, 24 volt, and 48 volt DC systems are the most common. The life expectancy of 12 volt solar panels is well over 20 years and they fall in the range of 12-14% efficiency.

Solar power is still “alternative energy”, and part of that is due to its high cost to produce. They’re so expensive because they are made of supremely pure silicon semi-conductor materials. New materials are being explored and they’re geared toward lowering production costs, making solar energy more readily available to the general public. Cadmium Telluride based solar panels are one of the new technologies being explored, and if these are successful materials then solar panels should become more affordable for the average citizen. This is great news for the environment as more and more people convert to solar energy, the atmosphere can begin to heal.

Soon enough, solar energy won’t be considered “alternative” anymore. You want to consider certain things if you’re planning on converting to solar power before making a decision, but it’s a step in the right direction for the environment. The benefits outweigh the cost when it comes to our planet’s health. Energy independence has become a common goal for many, and if you want to use solar as just a back up plan, then the choice is practically already made for you. The planet will benefit immensely once solar energy is accessible to everyone.

The whole World is realizing the need to look at alternative ways to generate energy. In some countries they are becoming popular, but Canada has been making use of wind power systems for years. It has become widely accepted within the local and business communities as the means of generating their power requirements.

Canada has been very proactive in how it has been seeking to use the wealth of the natural resources it has. It knows it has to supplement the power generated by the more traditional methods of hydro power stations and fossil fueled power stations.

Using wind energy to power wind turbines to generate electricity is fantastic for the environment. With this as one of the major factors, the Canadian Wind Energy Association has made a strategy that will greatly increase the energy produced using the power of the wind to 55,000 MW by 2025. And the wind is a resource will not diminish and need to be replaced in the future.

Ontario was the first province to embrace the use of wind power, but Quebec and Alberta have now joined in and others are making good progress in this field. When this century began all of the provinces had done something about implementing a plan to move towards using renewable energy. They all know that they have to build wind farms, or some other method of sourcing alternate energy, as the traditional methods are running out of supplies.

Currently British Columbia is the only province that does not have a commercial wind farm, but the area’s electronic company has recently issued an Electricity Purchase Agreements for over 300 MW of wind-powered electricity, and other wind farms are being built across the country so that more citizens can experience the benefits.

Even so, the amount of electricity that is generated by wind turbines in Canada is still fairly small in comparison to other sources, like coal and hydro-power. There are about 85 wind farms in Canada at this time, and this represents almost 2300 MW of generating capacity. But this number is growing all the time.

In the United States the border cities of Chicago and Detroit are also taking an interest in what is happening in Canada. They are giving a lot more thought to the use of renewable energies, including the wind, to power the large number of factories in their area. The benefits to their budgets and the environment would be incredible. Even if relying totally on wind power to fuel the cities is not practical, there is also the possibility of developing hybrid projects in order to lessen the drain on fossil fuels.

But it is not just governments and big business that can benefit from this trend towards using alternative sources of <noindex>green energy</noindex> and other programs like the <noindex>Feed in Tarriff program</noindex>. Residents can also get in on the act and buy equipment to create their own power from the wind. A small wind turbine would cost approximately $5000 and generate in the region of 25% to 30% of the amount of power that is normally needed domestically. If you have more space you could go for something that generates more energy, even up to 50%, but you will have to pay about $7000 for the equipment. If your requirements are a bit lower than that and you want to power your off-grid cabin you can get a machine that will supply 200 watts for as little as $600.

It’s possible to run your business through more innovative ways by utilizing inventions like <noindex>wind power</noindex> and other <noindex>alternative energy</noindex> solutions that make your process more environmental and efficient!

You pretty much can't escape the dependency on solar energy here on Earth Nobody would be alive, not me or you or any plant or animal, if the sun suddenly stopped burning. Plankton, one of the smallest, most simple forms of life on this planet, must have solar energy to develop and live. Without light and heat from the sun, we could kiss all of plant life goodbye on Earth. With no plants around, all the herbivore animals die, which means the food source for the carnivores die, and its just one deadly chain reaction on up, all the way to homosapians (us). This shows how humans are actually dependent on the sunshine for their lives.

You pretty much can’t escape the dependency on solar energy here on Earth Nobody would be alive, not me or you or any plant or animal, if the sun suddenly stopped burning.

Another interesting fact is that solar energy is 100% environmentally safe because it has no carbon emissions. Solar energy is limitless, as long as the sun doesn’t burn out! It can be utilized for electric production and heat collection all around the world. Water is heated using the natural heat that accompanies sunlight.

Electricity can also be created by using photovoltaic cells that turn solar energy into electric current. Photovoltaic cells can be installed in residences and office buildings and schools very quickly. Thousands of people even build their own photovoltaic cell energy systems!

Also, another neat fact about solar energy is that solar powered cars and trucks are being researched and developed, and NASA even made a plane that travels solely on energy from the sun!

Believe it or not, many people nowadays are choosing to make their own solar panels. Making your own solar panels isn’t as complicated as first thought. With DIY solar panels, homeowners can reduce their dependence on the electric company by a great deal!

If your energy bills are getting higher and higher and you are finding it difficult to cope then you may be thinking of investing in an alternative power supply. There are now some cheaper ways to get renewable energies installed and you could be making savings quickly. You can now get lots of information on the internet and elsewhere about alternative energy solutions.

The momentum for changes in energy is also coming from the environmental movement. Climate change and environmental degradation is a concern for many people so organizations, governments and individuals are all trying to bring about change. Individuals are contributing to the fight against global warming by changing their energy use and using sustainable green energy, <noindex>wind power</noindex>, and clean supplies.

It is difficult to produce figures for the possible savings when changing electricity supply as house size and location change the figures immensely. There really is no reliable average. However you can use an online energy calculator do a home energy check. You will input information about your house and the website can calculate how much money you are likely to save by using different sustainable energy technologies. This is a great way to decide which type of technology to use and it will help you to figure out how much you can afford to invest.

The two most popular forms of sustainable home energy are wind and solar power. There are advantages to both but the location of your house will probably be the deciding factor because the weather is so important. For example, to make use of solar power you really need many hours of sunlight each day.

Solar power is harnessed using photovoltaic cells. These are put into panels which are usually installed on the roof of your house. One of the criticisms of solar power has been the cost of installation. For many years it was very high and people calculated that it could take as long as the life of the cells to recover their savings. However the costs have lowered in recent years as more companies provide the service.

The same was true for wind turbines for a long time too. They were expensive to buy and then often did not produce much electricity. In recent years developments in the technology have lead to lower prices and more efficient turbines. You still need to live in a place with strong winds to make the investment pay.

It is now becoming popular to install these technologies yourself. There are do it yourself kits available with everything you need. These are a lot cheaper than having a company carry out the installation. You can do it for even less money by building the solar panels or turbine from scratch. Most of the necessary parts can be purchased from hardware stores or on the internet. There are also many websites with information on the construction process and how to calculate the sizes of panels and turbines you will need.

Alternative energy solutions are being sought by many people as they try to save money and lower their carbon footprint. The internet is a mine of information you can utilize to start your search.

Since 1970, the top retailer for <noindex>solar power</noindex> toys offers a wide variety of resources to aspiring scientists. Learn about alternative energy solutions, among other scientific knowledge, with these high-quality <noindex>science lab equipment</noindex>.

When it comes to converting your home into a solar home, there are several options, because not all homes have the same problems, the same requirements or the same potential sustainable power sources. Therefore, if you are going to attempt a total conversion or even get off the grid completely, you will either need to do some do research or call in an expert to make a survey for you.

If you call in an expert, try to get an independent one, so that you can work out the costs of satisfying your energy requirements yourself. You will have to pay for such a survey, naturally, but you could carry out a report yourself with a bit of work on your part. In order to create a solar home, you may find the rest of this piece interesting.

There are fundamentally two types of solar design: passive and active solar energy. Passive solar energy can be used to supply heating, cooling and natural light for your home. Active solar energy is used for powering home appliances, tools and lighting. It is the perfect combination of these two kinds of solar energy that you will try to achieve, if you are trying to convert your home into a solar home.

You can make use of passive solar energy methods in many ways, although they are more easily built in during the actual construction phase of a new home. The largest area of glass should face south or be within 30 degrees of due south. This will catch the maximum amount of heat. This heat can then be distributed around the house by stone floors and stone walls.

The central heating ducting and furnace fan can be utilized to assist, if need be. If the house becomes too hot in the summer, awnings or even solar panels could be dropped down in order to put the windows in shadow. When thinking of passive solar energy, you should endeavor to think of means of supplying warmth and coolness without using electricity. For example, a skylight at the top of the stairs will allow the warmest air in the house to escape, since hot air rises. This will cause cooler air to be sucked into the house at lower levels.

The other aspect of a solar house is the generation of electricity by the use of solar panels grouped into solar arrays. Solar panels make use of photovoltaic cells to convert light into energy. This energy can then be used to power ordinary electrical appliances of all kinds or some or all of it can be stored in batteries for later use. Conversion from AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current) and back again, if necessary, is a simple matter.

Solar energy can also be used to heat water for the pool or for the home. The most common type of system uses pipes filled with a kind of anti-freeze to collect the sun’s heat and pass it on to tanks of water via a heat exchanger.

A solar home uses energy efficiency to reduce the need for heating, cooling and electricity. The use of higher grade insulation, more energy efficient windows, kitchen appliances and lighting than those used in traditional homes, will save you a lot of money and energy. As you can see, some of these changes, especially the passive ones are structural, so hard to apply in many homes, but there is always something you can do to cut your energy bills and slowly convert your home into a solar home.

It is almost high noon on the energy front. Oil, the substance that is used to create most of the world’s electricity is becoming too dear to use to produce electricity for home consumption. Even if you believe that there are lakes of oil left, which might be true, the main reason they have not been exploited yet is because it is too expensive to get out. The only thing that makes it a going concern is the high price of oil on the market.

Therefore, it stands to reason that oil prices cannot go down in the long term, which means that our electricity and petrol prices will stay high and will almost certainly keep going up. Add to that the fact that manufacturing is moving to the Far East and the fact that immigration is rising and the result is lower wages in the West. The probability is that the average national wage will not rise as rapidly as the cost of energy.

So what can you do about it? Well, while commodity prices are bound to keep rising, one thing has always kept falling and that is the cost of new technology. Or to be more precise, slightly old technology. Cutting edge technology is always dear, but after a few years the price tumbles, as we saw with desktop computers and as we are seeing with laptop computers now.

The same trend is at work with solar panels. They are far less expensive now than they were a few years ago and they are far more responsive too. And did you know that the components that are used to make solar panels can be purchased from plastic bins at most DIY and hobbyist stores like Radio Shack? If you knew what to buy you could literally go out and bring back enough bits and pieces to make a few solar panels the next time you go out for a loaf of bread.

So why are we not doing it? We did not know that was feasible? Nobody told us? We are not technologically minded? We do not have the skill?

OK, all those reasons sound valid. Nobody has been telling us, but the fact is that it is easy to construct solar panels and not that dear any more. Professional installations are still dreadfully expensive – about $45,000 -, but you can do it yourself. There are two approaches you can take.

You can either get a schematic diagram, a plan, from a hobbyist shop or the Internet, buy the parts and build your panel or you can buy a self-assembly kit. Really, there are kits about that teenagers can assemble as easily as they do a plastic model airplane. ‘Locate and insert part number 44 into the main board number 3′ – that sort of simple.

If you are new to the world of solar energy, then you may be wondering how solar energy panels work? Solar energy panels are also known as photovoltaic panels; photovoltaic meaning electricity from light. Solar energy panels work by collecting protons from the sun, which displace neutrons, and thereby generate a flow of electrons or electricity. This electricity can either be stored in batteries for later use or used directly.

You can use solar panels to heat your pool, run your workshop tools, power the greenhouse lights and fans or if your system is big enough, supplant grid electricity in your whole home or business. Most solar energy panels are intended to last upwards of 20 years but involve little to no looking after.

There is a drop-off of the power supply after about 10 years of about 10%, but over the life-time of the solar panels, the energy savings made are enough to recoup the original cost of the system and more. Furthermore, prices are tumbling while energy prices are increasing. It already makes economic sense to change to solar energy power.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with a favourite topic, <noindex>types of renewable energy</noindex>.
Many people are fed up of the escalating cost of electricity, but they do not know what they can do about it. They have switched lights off; they have not turned lights on; they have unplugged items on stand-by and they have turned the central heating down and the air con up and it has only saved them pennies. Yet still the electricity bills go up on a regular basis. It is very frustrating.

Many people are fed up of the escalating cost of electricity, but they do not know what they can do about it. They have switched lights off; they have not switched lights on; they have unplugged devices on stand-by and they have turned the central heating down and the air con up and it has only saved them coppers. Yet still the electricity bills rise on a regular basis. It is very exasperating.

We have all heard of alternative and sustainable sources of energy, but the question is: how can average people instigate these technologies into their own homes? One phone call to a professional solar power installation company will persuade anyone that solar power is only for the well-off.

Similarly with wind power generation. A single device, which may or may not satisfy the electrical requirements of one average family will cost in the region of $45,000 and it is thought that, if it meets aspirations, that it will pay for itself after ten years time. $45,000 is too much money for most individuals, but having to wait ten years to realize that investment is too long for most people too.

So, at first glance, it looks like the average person is at the mercy of the oil companies and the electricity generators. However, it does not have to be like that. There are other ways of tackling the problem and extricating yourself from the control of energy providers. The first method would be to buy the solar power units and install them yourself. That would save you a lot, perhaps up to 50%. But you could go a step further and make the solar panels yourself as well, which would save you a great deal more money.

The fact is that the more of your own labour that you can put into the project, the more you will save, because the labour constituent in any task usually amounts to about 50% of the costs. We all know how costly it is to call a plumber in to fix a leaking pipe or a roofer to replace a slate. $100 for a slate? $100 for a dribble of solder? No, it is the tradesman’s time and the same is true of solar panel fitters.

The way out is to learn how to make the solar power units and install them yourself. It is not hard. Any teenager can learn how to do it and so can you. Believe me, learning how to assemble and install solar panels is not hard. Just try it and see for yourself. You will amaze yourself and your friends. You may even transform it into a business!

The thing to do is get a dependable kit or a plan from a trusted source. This could be a neighborhood hardware or hobbyist store or from a specialist website on the Internet. Once you have your design, you can buy the pieces of equipment. They are commonplace and available in most DIY shops. Then it will take you about a day to make a solar panel that will provide about 100 watts.

This may not sound like much, but it will power many kinds of small machines or two average light bulbs. The trick is to keep adding to your bank of solar panels until you are entirely free of the electricity net or even selling electricity back into it.

Electricity created from wind powered turbines is one of the most prevalent forms of energy from alternative sources and it is the fastest-growing variety too. Wind turbines are turned by the natural strength of the wind, so make electricity without ‘burning up’ any fossil fuels in the procedure. The faster (harder) the wind gusts, the more electricity is produced.

Therefore, wind turbines are best situated where there are prolonged periods of high wind. The coast line is often a good place to site wind turbines. In fact many coastal towns and cities are supplementing their existing conventional electricity supply with electricity created from wind turbines.

You can still produce energy from wind, even if the wind does not blow very hard where you live, but the return will be less. It could still be sufficient, but maybe you should check out solar panels as well. For instance, it may suit your location to have a wind turbine for the winter and a couple of solar panels for the summer and winter back up.

Making a wind turbine is not rocket science, most people who are good with their hands can assemble a wind turbine with the help of a good set of DIY plans. The real trick is to get all the parts that the plans say you will require before you begin. That way, you can concentrate on following the plans without having to go off every now and again to get a component.

One valid point is that you should not worry about creating too much electricity, because many the electricity companies in many countries are obliged to buy your surplus electricity back off you nowadays. This is not a difficult process, you just have to stay plugged into the grid and your surplus electricity will flow back into the grid changing the numbers on the meter automatically.

In this instance your meter is read monthly or quarterly as normal, but you will be given a refund rather that a bill. The more wind turbines and solar panels you install, the bigger a reimbursement you are likely to receive. In some cases, the units of electricity that you sell back are worth up to twice the units you use from the same electricity company.

Aside from the fact that you will not be receiving an electricity bill every month or that your bill will be vastly reduced, a very significant point is that you will be one of the very, very few people who is not badly affecting our planet. You will not be so accountable for the greenhouse gases that are produced by manufacturing conventional electricity.

You have nothing to lose by learning more about creating your own electricity, coming off the grid and doing your bit for the natural world. The very least that can take place is that you read the information and become wiser on the subject and you may not implement you knowledge that you have learned. This would be a real pity, but not a big financial loss.

Its ok to save bucks in this depressing time. You have a lot of monthly dues to settle, starting from insurance cover to electric power. Any time you could go environment friendly, you may save a lot of bucks on a yearly basis.

It is projected that the common solar powered residence saves above $250 each month. There are tons of folks who ignore the capacities of solar electrical power. Many individuals imagine that solar electrical power is not suitable for powering electrical machines in the residence, as an example in the cooking area. In fact, it is possible to count on solar electrical power only when you improve your residence for solar architecture. This signifies that your residence has to be designed with techniques that take full advantage of the performance of solar electrical power.

The price tag on putting in solar panel systems for your residence will start from approximately $20,000 and over.Ok, some folks could imagine that this is much capital. Accurate, as start-up budget the money is in fact excessive, nevertheless you should consider your residence solar undertaking as an investment undertaking. The fascinating thing is you hardly ever have to settle your electrical energy expenditures again from the area electricity board.

Individuals who depend on main electrical power from the electricity board will keep on settling bills each month since they do not own the electrical power. They are really leasing the electrical power. As the proprietor of a house driven by <noindex>solar panels</noindex>, you possess your personal electrical power source so you need not pay anybody. This is the great thing about a solar powered house.

The price tag on solar electrical energy is roughly $10 and $20 for every watt. This is less costly than the local board electricity. As soon as you create a solar powered residence or deploy a solar platform, you should check your utilization. When you examine your <noindex>solar panel</noindex> electrical power utilization versus your electrical energy bills, you will observe the quantity you are cutting down monthly. A solar powered residence was created to acquire the maximum amount of electrical power as possible from the solar panel systems. High-priced techniques create huge amounts of solar electrical power while standard techniques utilize mild quantities of energy.

Think of putting in solar panel systems for your residence. It could be a vacation cabin, private accommodation, holiday apartment, duplex residence or condo. The price tag on installation depends on the form of structure and its measurement. Installing for a vacation cabin will cost less than a flat or guesthouse.

You do not have to demolish your household as a way to add solar electricity. Solar electricity might be included in your dwelling by authorities in this discipline.

You might determine the percentage change you desire to your household. You may to a degree employ solar electricity jointly with major electricity from the city authority or you might transform your household into a 100% solar powered household.
